Leadership crisis: Police seal Ondo Assembly

The Ondo State Police Command has sealed off the state’s House of Assembly Complex on Monday morning due to leadership crisis in the House.

The crisis began on Friday after the speaker, Mrs. Jumoke Akindele, was purportedly suspended together with two other principal officers of the assembly by 14 members.
The other two suspended officers are, the deputy speaker, Mr. Fatai Olotu, and the majority leader, Mr. Ifedayo Akinsoyinu.
The 14 lawmakers, after suspending Akindele and others, appointed Mr. Malachi Coker, representing Ilaje Constituency 1 as the acting speaker, while Ayodele Arowele from Owo Constituency 1 and Olamide George from Akure North Constituency were appointed deputy speaker and majority leader, respectively.
According to a source, members of the two factions of the Assembly had arrived at the complex on Monday morning and started verbally abusing each other.
It took the intervention of a team of policemen led by the state police commissioner, Mrs. Hilda Harrison, that prevented the legislators from engaging in a free for all.
The source said, “The police commissioner had to send everybody out of the assembly complex, including the lawmakers and staff of the House. She thereafter sealed of the complex.”
